When Images can be Altered With AI
The Alter Image option allows users to edit an image with AI directly in a Project. This can be helpful when you want to make image adjustments without replacing the original image manually.
In some cases, the Alter Image option may not be available. This happens when an image cannot be altered by AI due to size or transparency limitations.
When the Alter Image option is not availableThe Alter Image option is hidden when the image cannot be processed by the current AI model.
This can happen for two reasons:
- The image size on the canvas is larger than 4 million pixels
- The image includes transparency
How image size affects AI editing
Design Huddle checks the size of the image as it appears on the canvas. If the image is larger than 4 million pixels, the Alter Image option is not shown.
This limit helps prevent quality issues. The current AI models cannot generate an altered image file larger than 4 million pixels. Using a smaller generated file for a larger image could cause the image to appear pixelated in the final design.
For example, a 1080 x 1080 px Project with a background image that is approximately 1080 x 1080 px would be under the limit:
1080 x 1080 = 1,166,400 pixels
A larger Project, or an image that extends beyond the canvas, may exceed the limit. For example, an image sized 3632 x 2419 px equals:
3632 x 2419 = 8,786 pixels
This is larger than 4 million pixels, so the Alter Image option would not be available.
How DPI affects print Projects
For print Projects, Design Huddle also factors in DPI when determining whether an image can be altered with AI.
The DPI used depends on the type of print Project:
- Large format print Projects use 150 DPI
- Other print Projects use 300 DPI
Because DPI affects the final output size of the image, an image that appears acceptable on screen may still exceed the AI size limit in a print Project.
Images with transparency
Images that include transparency cannot be altered with AI.
If an image has transparent areas, the Alter Image option is not available for that image. To use AI editing, replace the image with a version that does not include transparency.
What to do if Alter Image is unavailable
If the Alter Image option is not shown, try one of the following:
- Select a smaller image on the canvas.
- Resize the image so it uses fewer pixels in the design.
- Replace the image with a non-transparent version.
- Use a different image that is below the AI size limit.
Once the image meets the supported requirements, the Alter Image option will be available.
