How to Use Advanced Font Features

Advanced Font Features allow you to control OpenType styling options for supported fonts, including ligatures, stylistic alternates, swashes, and titling characters. These options are helpful when working with decorative or script fonts that include additional character variations.

Please note that the Advanced Font Features option will only appear after a font with a ligature has been added to the Project.

When to Use This

Advanced Font Features are useful when you want to:

  • Enable connected or decorative letter combinations
  • Apply alternate character styles provided by a font
  • Add decorative swashes to supported characters
  • Use titling characters designed for headings or display text

Available options depend on the features included with the selected font.

Advanced Font Feature Options

When Advanced Text Features are available, you can choose from many options, including:

  • Ligatures — Replaces certain combinations of letters with a single combined glyph when the font supports it. For example, a font may provide a custom connected version of two letters that appear together.
  • Stylistics — Applies alternate stylistic versions of characters included with the font. These alternatives can change the appearance of individual letters while keeping the same text.
  • Swashes — Enables decorative flourishes or extended strokes included with supported characters. Swashes are commonly found in script and display fonts.
  • Titling — Uses alternate characters designed specifically for larger display text or headings. These characters may have different proportions or styling than the font's standard characters.

How to Use Advanced Font Features

To apply an Advanced Font Feature:

  1. Add a font with a supported ligature to the Project.
  2. Select the font from the font list.
  3. Click the Enable Advanced Font Features icon on the selected font.
  4. Select or clear the checkbox for Ligatures, Stylistics, Swashes, or Titling.

Once selected, the supported font feature will be applied to characters where that option is available in the font.

Changing Advanced Font Features

To change the styling, return to Edit Advanced Font Features and select or clear the available options.

Not every font supports every Advanced Font Feature. If a font does not support a specific feature, that styling option will not be available when using that font.

Advanced Font Features are supported for Design Huddle's built-in fonts as well as any fonts added to Design Huddle around March 2026 or later. To enable Advanced Font Feature support for fonts uploaded before this time, you will need to re-upload the font.
