How to Import PDF and Illustrator Files Using the MCP Server

The Design Huddle MCP server allows you to import existing designs into Design Huddle using Claude, ChatGPT, or any other AI assistant that supports connectors/plugins. This is helpful when you want to make an existing design editable in Design Huddle or publish it as a reusable template.

The MCP server supports the following file types:

• PDF: Import the PDF directly into Design Huddle.
• Adobe Illustrator (.ai): Import the native .ai file directly into Design Huddle.

Use this workflow when you want to bring an existing design into Design Huddle without rebuilding it from scratch.

Common examples include:

• Brochures and flyers
• Presentations
• Social graphics
• Advertisements
• Product sheets
• Other designs created outside Design Huddle

To import a design using the MCP server, follow these steps:

1. Attach the PDF or Illustrator (.ai) file to your conversation in your AI assistant.
2. Ask the assistant to import the file into Design Huddle.
3. Specify the media type:
• Print
• Digital
• Presentation
• Video
4. Provide any additional Project settings, such as the Project title, brand, tags, bleed settings, or locking profile.
5. Once the import is complete, open the Project in Design Huddle and review the design.

Confirm that text, fonts, images, colors, page dimensions, and bleed settings appear as expected before publishing the Project.

You can provide the name of an existing locking profile when creating the Project. The MCP server can retrieve the available locking profiles and match the name to the correct profile.

A locking profile can be supplied through the MCP server when:

• Creating a new blank Project
• Importing a PDF as a new Project
• Creating a new Project from an existing template

A locking profile cannot be applied through the MCP server to a Project or template that already exists. If the Project has already been created, locking settings must be applied manually in the Design Huddle Editor.

After reviewing the imported Project, you can ask the MCP server to publish it as a Design Huddle template.

Provide the template title and any applicable brand, user group, category, or tag settings. Specify whether you want to create a new template or update an existing template.

Import a PDF

“Import the attached PDF into Design Huddle as a print Project titled Summer Brochure. Apply the Standard Print locking profile and show me the Project details after it is created.”

Import an Illustrator (.ai) file

“Import the attached .ai file into Design Huddle as a digital Project titled Social Campaign. Apply the Social Media locking profile and preserve the editable text and design elements.”

Import and publish as a template

“Import the attached PDF into Design Huddle as a print Project titled Event Flyer using the Marketing Materials locking profile. After the import is complete, publish it as a new template titled Event Flyer Template.”

For best results, use the original source file whenever possible and confirm that the fonts used in the design are available in Design Huddle.

Review every page of the imported Project before publishing. Check text wrapping, font substitutions, images, colors, page dimensions, and bleed settings.

Use the exact locking profile and brand names when providing instructions. This helps the MCP server identify the correct records.

If text or artwork is not editable after import, the source content may have been flattened or converted to outlines. Use the original source file with editable text and artwork when possible.

If fonts appear differently, confirm that the required fonts are available in Design Huddle or provide approved replacement fonts.

If the wrong locking profile is selected, ask the MCP server to list the available locking profiles and confirm the exact profile name.

If the MCP server is not returning information or actions that should be available, disconnect and reconnect the Design Huddle plugin or connector. Reconnecting can help ensure the assistant has access to the latest available tools and capabilities.
